Playdifferently – Model 1

MODEL 1 is a performance instrument providing new creative possibilities to artists, and empowering them to PLAYdifferently.

A mixer of uncompromising build quality, intuitive tactile controls and beautifully warm analog circuitry, MODEL 1 is engineered by Andy Rigby-Jones and co-designed by Richie Hawtin, with two years of testing, insight and refinement with artistsclubs and engineersfrom across the electronic music community.

MODEL 1 has a unique offering of six fully featured input channels plus two stereo returns in a small format frame. It has many features not currently available on any comparable device, such as Input pre-amplifier drive control, hybrid filter/swept bell EQ, dual cue system, dual mixer linking system, and a fully balanced Tascam DB25 connector system.

MODEL 1 is a purely analogue mixer featuring technology normally found in the finest studio consoles, such as a fully balanced mix buss, zero crossing detection for seamless filter & master EQ routing along high voltage differential power rails.

Model 1

This is a fully analog mixer, built in the UK, and it has an impressive feature set. Here’s an overview of the most notable:

  • 6 stereo channels
  • Contour filters: Individual low Q LPF and HPF for each channel, “designed not to add colour to the sound as they are swept across their frequency range. Due to the low Q , these filters only cut, they do not boost”
  • Master Filter: this is a filter that’s separate from any individual channels – you can assign any of them to it – similar to other Xone mixers
  • 2 stereo sends + returns: each with an assignable filter and low cut, they also can be assigned to the mixer filter.
  • Two Cues: Specifically designed for two DJs to use this mixer concurrently, there are two separate cue systems for previewing audio
  • Sculpt EQ: “a semi-parametric swept bell filter, and consist of two controls, FREQ which sets the centre frequency and CUT/BOOST which adjust the gain or attenuation at this frequency. The level of cut/boost is asymmetric; maximum boost is limited to +8dB, while the cut is extended to -20dB. Sculpt has a wide Q and a frequency range that covers almost seven octaves.”
  • Master EQ: an overall EQ that effects the master output
  • Booth Out EQ: a two-band EQ that allows adjusting of the booth output
  • Drive Control: Every input on the mixer has a Drive knob, which allows you to adjust “the level at which the channel pre-amplifier clips the input signal, thus creating harmonic distortion as an effect”.

PRICE:
£2550 worldwide shipping included (plus applicable sales taxes/duties)

Odesi – The all new production aid from Mixed in Key

Mixed In Key has just released Odesi, a new type of software that’s designed to speed up music production in Ableton Live, Logic, Reason, Pro Tools and all other music production software. Odesi helps producers, vocalists, song-writers and DJs create melodies, basslines and chord progressions, as well as memorable hooks.

Check out the introduction video to get an idea of what Odesi can do for you.

The well thought out layout of the software makes it easy to get to grips with whats happening almost immediately resulting in quick results, seamless workflow and tonnes of fun from the start! Odesi looks like the MIDI view found in most DAW's meaning nearly every producer should feel at home when using it. What separates Odesi is the fact you can view each element you are working on (Drums, bass, lead synth) in one screen together. Odesi supports MIDI export Ableton Live, Reason, Pro Tools, Logic and all other DAWs meaning you can easily transfer the work you have created within the software instantly into a different project.
This software is a go to for anyone experiencing writers block. Set up the foundations for a track quickly and easily by selecting a drum pattern and choosing from one of 138 different chord progressions, apply the bassline generator and now you have a fresh foundation to start building on top of. The same process applies to any new producer getting swamped down a bummed out with seemingly endless theory! By using Odesi to augment your process you can learn at the same time as working on new music keeping you excited and switched on to whats happening with your latest track.
Odesi DJ Mixed in Key

The most important features at a glance:

  • Sonic sketchpad: Odesi is an ultra-fast MIDI editor that makes it possible to sketch musical ideas and save them to a session that can be opened in any other DAW to choose the sounds and finish the production
  • Automatic “Snap-to-Key and Scale”: The default view shows which notes are allowed in a specific Key and Scale, making it impossible to go off-key in the composition
  • Chord Progressions: Odesi makes it easy to write custom chord progressions, or use a bank of 138 memorable progressions used in today’s popular music, with deep customization options
  • Rhythms: The musician can apply rhythms to both Chords and Basslines, creating endless combinations of intertwined rhythms. There is a bank of 138 highly-customizable ideas, discovered by Mixed In Key, in Pop music, Hip Hop, Rock, Caribbean and Latin music, as well as the most popular rhythms found in electronic music tracks produced from 1986 to today – starting with early Chicago House and ending with the latest Beatport top 100
  • Intelligent basslines: When the project contains a Chord Progression, the Bassline generator will adjust to match the chords, making it easy to experiment with different basslines without having to edit the MIDI notes with every chord change
  • New visualization of MIDI: Odesi displays all notes on a single canvas. Chords, Melody, Bass and Drums are visible on the same screen, enabling edits to be made faster and more easily
  • Acceleration of Ableton Live, Logic and other DAWs: Odesi supports MIDI export to Ableton Live, Reason, Pro Tools, Logic and all other DAWs
  • Access your sessions from anywhere: Odesi runs in a web browser, and is accessible anywhere, anytime. Older sessions will no longer be lost on external hard drives and buried in a closet. When a session is finished, Odesi automatically sends it as an email attachment for backup and safekeeping.
  • Recording on the road: Odesi allows you to record melodies, chords and bass from both your MIDI controller and your computer keyboard. If you’re on a Macbook and don’t have a controller available, you can use the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 keys to play the beats, and ASDFGHJ keys to play notes.
  • Sound banks pulled from today’s hottest music: Although the “grand piano” sound can be used in the web version, there is also a companion app for Mac OS X that extends Odesi with support for 117 different sounds, pulled from today’s hottest music. It contains pianos, leads basses and drum kits that sound crisp and “current.” The musician can put together an audio demo of the track without leaving Odesi when running Mac OS X 10.10 or newer.
  • Change Key and Scale anytime: Odesi can change the Key and Scale of the entire composition, even after the entire MIDI was already written. It’s possible to change the mood from Major to Minor, or to add a Blues feeling to the track. It makes it easier to adjust the composition to fit a vocalist’s range as well and experiment with different keys.
Odesi Pricing and Availability
Odesi is now available as a web-based version. The price is a one-time fee of $49 USD. There is a Mac OS X companion app that requires Mac OS X 10.10 or newer, which gives Odesi account holders the ability to use Audio Units on their computers, as well as the bank of 117 sounds. A similar Windows companion app is planned for the future. Odesi requires Internet access and does not work without a connection. This is by design, because it enables future collaboration and project access from anywhere.By popular demand, the team behind Odesi is launching a new YouTube series to examine what makes music so memorable. Six videos are available now, and 20+ more are coming soon. These “Top Hits, Analyzed” videos examine Chords, Melodies and Basslines of popular songs and explain the unique features of each one. The first six videos are:

  • Daft Punk – One More Time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYBdgvYNbuk
  • Kygo – Stole the Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jk2LYd2qC0

LSA Graduate success – Kid Cut

LSA Student Kid Cut wins Brighton Music Conference DJ Competition!

Kid Cut
One of our students recently won a set at the Brighton Music Conference, one of the UK's biggest electronic music events.
Nick Burdick, AKA Kid Cut, who has been learning Logic production and DJing at LSA for just over two years, supported disco-house act Crazy P at the BMC after party in Brighton on 15 Apr.  The two day event is in it's third year and growing quickly.  It attracts speakers from across the industry who give seminars on everything from sampling to making it in the music industry.
Nick said, "I had heard of the event before but I didn't know they ran a DJ competition each year.  When I saw the news that they were running another one, I jumped at the chance to submit a mix.  I thought I'd submit one that people on the Brighton scene would appreciate so I went back to my big beat roots.  I was hoping that it would strike a nostalgic chord with the judges and it must have worked!  Most of the other mixes were house and techno but they said they liked mine because it stood out from the others which was really pleasing."
As part of the prize, Nick won a music distribution deal with Horus Music so he has been busy working on his new material to release this summer.
He said, "I didn't really have anything ready to send to Horus Music straight away to be released but winning the competition has given me some real inspiration to get back into the studio at LSA and get some stuff finished off!"

LSA Graduate success – Peter Pavlov / Flemcy Music

LSA Graduate success – Peter Pavlov / Flemcy Music

When Flemcy Music held its first event a couple of months ago, Peter Pavlov was in the room. A bit anxious, he dropped his pendrive in the demodrop box among other producers. We loved his track “Memories” at Flemcy, with its infectious bass, sweet arpeggios, solid synth line and haunting vocal sounds, so we could not resist to release it.

Pioneer introduce DVS to Rekordbox

Rekordbox is now DVS compatible for all you multi platform DJ's out there!

Rekordbox DVS LSA

Even more ways to play

rekordbox dvs and the Control Vinyl work hand-in-hand to give you a smooth, low-latency scratching experience with excellent sound quality. The software uses the same audio processing engine as our pro-DJ set-up to deliver a high quality sound, while the lightweight Control Vinyl is highly responsive. rekordbox dvs adds keyboard shortcuts, accessed through your laptop keyboard, which allows you to quickly find hot cues, load decks and other shortcut tricks without the use of hardware. Plus you can use rekordbox MIDI Learn to assign features to your controller for even more flexibility. And you can use rekordbox dvs with all our DVS compatible mixers and controllers, so it will slot straight into your existing set-up.

Prepare and play from a single rekordbox library with various types of DJ equipment

rekordbox™ now allows many styles of DJ performance with various hardware - multi players, controllers and even with turntables thanks to the DVS support - with a single library. You can accumulate your performance history on various occasions back to the same library for even better DJing.

Pioneer already dominate the industry standard for DJ equipment with their high end mixers and unbeatable CDJ's, could we soon be seeing hip-hop DJ's replacing their ever popular Serato time codes for Rekordbox?
